Anapo Valley – Sortino

The R.N.O Pantalica – Valle dell’Anapo is certainly one of the most evocative places in the Hyblaean area, where the millennia-long presence of Sicilian man is witnessed. Here nature explodes in all its magnificence with the very rich vegetation present, the Anapo and Calcinara rivers that flow gently within the valley, along the old route of the Siracusa-Vizzini Railroad and create a unique place of extraordinary beauty. It continues with a a visit to Sortino, a town rich in history, which before the 1693 earthquake stood on the coast above the Guccione River; with reconstruction the town was enriched with fine palaces and wonderful Baroque churches. The visit to the permanent exhibition of the Sicilian cart “RIO” allows visitors to admire a splendid collection of carts from the best Catanese school, which highlight the path of the cart over the years and the pictorial themes represented in the paintings (chess). A visit to the House Museum of Traditional Beekeeping “A casa do fascitraru” will experience the thrill of visiting an authentic and intact beekeeper’s putia, fascinating environment that allows a dip into the past. Along the museum tour you can see the tools for building beehives, the fascetri ca ferra, with the ferula. Bellied jars, used to store sweet orange blossom, wildflower or thyme honey, which fill the room with an intoxicating fragrance. The production of honey and pizzolo a stuffed wheat flatbread with vegetables or meats, a true gastronomic delicacy, still remain the city’s most authentic traditions.
