The dome of the Church of the Carmine Maggiore
The most colorful jewel of Sicilian baroque!
On Sunday, June 20, the Terradamare Tourist Cooperative is organizing a guided tour by reservation to the famous dome of the Carmine Church. The 20-minute tour costs €5 for adults and €2 for children.
A dome of glazed majolica, among the most whimsical jewels of Sicilian Baroque, pops up in the distance amid the scents of the Ballarò market. Built by the Carmelites in the 13th century and later rebuilt by Smiriglio, the dome is part of the Church of the Carmine Maggiore. A unique originality resulting from the polychrome enamel of Carmelite colors and the illusory structural support given by the telamons depicted in the drum.
Not to be missed inside the three-aisled church are Gagini’s statues, stucco work and Pietro Novelli’s fresco of the “Virgin of Carmel with St. Andrea Corsini.”
