In Cinisi, the historic “Self-Propelled Nativity Scene” by Giacomo Randazzo
At the Benedictine Palace in Cinisi, in the province of Palermo, Giacomo Randazzo’s ”Self-propelled Nativity Scene” will be on display. From Dec. 5, 2021 until Jan. 23, 2022, it will be possible to immerse oneself in this exhibition full of Christmas spirit and tradition.
This miniature spectacle shows itself as a symbol ofSicilian identity throughthe representation of local culture, ancient crafts and a cross-section of Sicilian peasant and artisan civilization. But also Carnival masks, typical foods, activities and more. A true work of art of great historical and anthropological value.
Randazzo created the scene with real materials, such as tufa, iron, wood, stone and ceramics, following extensive research and studies on their significance within the island population. Each character, then, is taken care of in great detail both from the point of view of the movements he or she makes and from the point of view of features and colors. In this setting is the theme of Christmas and the nativity, without too much fuss, depicted with Our Lady cradling her baby Jesus. In the center, a church in which characteristic elements of those in Cinisi emerge.
