Vulcan, the season of being
Keepers of winds, legends and inexhaustible sources of beauty, the Aeolian Islands remain a constantly evolving reality. Abodes of unspoiled nature and a way of life that makes contemplation of places its cornerstone. The following column has no explanatory purpose in the strict sense; it aims to make those who will read travel not only in space, but mainly in the soul of these suspended places, between sea and sky.
The flow of the wind. Island life in its purest form. This is what happens in the wonderful Aeolian setting, when the chatter of tourists gives way to the sound of the wind.
Slow rhythms and a lifestyle that makes essentiality one of its cornerstones. Time, marked only by the manifestations of Hephaestus, takes on a qualitative value here, in Therasia, present-day Vulcan. A concept that goes directly back to Greek philosophy, which used the term Kairos to denote the opportune moment, the good opportunity, the propitious time (Source Treccani).
Characterized by a subjective, indeterminate, infinite nature, capable of defining a unicum with the surrounding landscape; which does not merely play the role of a perfect frame but goes on to reappropriate spaces, normally pervaded by an increasingly international tourism.
The atmosphere, in this place suspended in time and space, radically mutates during the “slow” season in favor of a lightness that lingers in the island air.
Sea, Earth, Fire, Wind. Intrinsic elements of this place, brought together in this unique setting.
Vulcan is emotions. It is to submit oneself to mother earth, to the power of Iddu (affectionate name by which islanders call the volcano) and to the bursting power of the sea.
It is to recover a conception of life itself, made up of ancient traditions, of walks by the harbor, of imperceptible changes.
Those who decide to visit its shores during this period inherently acquire the value of guardians of the island.
