Historic Train Of The Temples: from Palermo to Porto Empedocle on a vintage convoy
The long-awaited appointment with the “Historic Train of the Temples” is back, after months of stoppage caused by upgrading work on the Agrigento Bassa – Porto Empedocle line. Sunday, November 6 l‘ancient convoy will depart from Palermo Centrale and, crossing the Sicilian hinterland, will reach the Archaeological Park of Agrigento and the seaside village of Porto Empedocle. A method of transportation emblematic of slow tourism and a slower approach to life.
This beautiful initiative is promoted by the association Kaos Railways, in agreement with FS Italian Foundation and in collaboration with: Palermo DOC Train, the Italian Environmental Fund and
Archeoclub “The Places of Empedocles”.
The itinerary of the historic train of temples
The train, after departing from Palermo station at 7:50 a.m., will make the following stops before arriving at the Temples of Agrigento:
- Bagheria (8.06)
- Termini Imerese (8.29)
- Roccapalumba – Alia (9.12)
- Cammarata San Giovanni Gemini (09.43)
- Aragon Caldare (10.46)
- Lower Agrigento (10.59)
From Agrigento Bassa station originates the legendary “Temples Railway,” the last remaining section of an ancient line closed to traffic since 1978. At 11:15 a.m. the train will reach the renovated “Temple of Vulcan” station, which is located in the heart of the Valley of the Temples.
Here, travelers will have the opportunity to disembark and, guided by FAI workers, spend a day exploring the distinctive Garden of the Kolymbetra. Like all the first Sundays of the month, access to the Archaeological Park will be free.
Those who wish can then continue their journey to Porto Empedocle Central station, arriving at 11:33 a.m.
Travelers, in addition to being able to visit and discover the particularities of this Museum Station, they can later continue the tour to discover Porto Empedocle with guides from the local section of the Archaeoclub,
where three routes will be waiting for them to choose from, discovering the center historical “Vigata,” the Lido Marinella and the legendary Scala dei Turchi.
The return train to Palermo is scheduled from Porto Empedocle Succursaleat 5:07 p.m. and from Vulcan Temple at 5:15 p.m., with arrival in the city scheduled for 8:26 p.m.
