Buccheri lies on the slopes of Mount Lauro, an ancient extinct crater rich in forested areas. Damaged by the earthquake of 1693, it was rebuilt in a short, open valley at the headwaters of the St. Leonard River; it has a medieval appearance, full of alleys of Islamic matrix, as well as Baroque-style buildings such as the fountain “Of the Four Canals,” which greets us with sculpted masks. Visit the 18th-century Church of Santa Maria Maddalena to appreciate Antonello Gagini’s statue of Mary Magdalene. The town is rich in churches decorated with stucco work by the Gianforma and has two canvases by Borremans in the Church of St. Anthony Abbot. The neviere are symbols of the agrarian and pastoral civilization on which the town based its economy, conical structures carved into the rock or made of lava stone ashlars used up to the 1950s and the extra virgin olive oil from the tonda iblea, which is recognized, awarded and appreciated all over the world. The Ethnoanthropological Museum of Buccheri was founded 30 years ago, thanks to the passion of Francesco Vacirca; it exhibits ancient majolica from Caltagirone, numerous tools of the peasant civilization and a large collection concerning sacred art. The centerpiece of the collection is a Sicilian cart from the late 1800s. The Bosco di S. Maria is a green lung, formed by oaks, cork oaks, holm oaks and turkey oaks, in which nature explodes in all its magnificence. A well-equipped amusement park makes it possible to complete a visit to Buccheri, summit of the Iblei, in joy.
