Full program
Each city has its own program with selected places to visit, all the walks and experiences designed for the occasion, so that each one is sure to make you amazed!
Sept. 10 to Sept. 25 (Saturday and Sunday)
Bagheria
You have the chance to enter unseen palaces, Baroque churches with stunning frescoes, experiences that fish from the tables of the monsoons. A beautiful and intellectual city awaits you, known thanks to Tornatore’s films, its villas on the Piana dei Colli, and the “monsters” of Villa Palagonia watching passersby. There is no shortage of history in this city; the Gravina family, princes of Cattolica and the very first circles that challenged the DC passed through here.
Caltanissetta
Heart of the island and rich in mines, grain, good food and especially history. It was the “Castle of the Women” for the Arabs, a Norman fiefdom, the domain of the Moncadas, the “Little Athens” of the 1930s-1950s, where Vittorini, Brancati and Quasimodo gathered in Sciascia’s living room. Don’t forget to stretch your gaze all the way to San Cataldo!
Enna
An almost impregnable stronghold, under the castle hides an ancient heart but at the same time a modern one! The Ways of Treasures leads to the discovery of the palaces, castles and convents that narrate the history of the city starting from Frederick III, passing through Garibaldi to the Fascist period.
Marsala
The town has a “British” flavor, like the columns of the Mother Church. Famous for its salt pans, but not only that, Marsala has a huge heritage with Punic, Phoenician and Roman artifacts, Basilian abbeys, Byzantine frescoes and chapels carved into the tuff. Don’t miss the breathtaking terraces overlooking the sea.
Mazara del Vallo
Famous for hosting the first Parliament of Sicily in 1097, but especially for the cathedral that stands on an ancient mosque. Close to Tunis, not even 200 km separate them, in fact the scent of couscous and spices is in the air, thanks in part to a perfectly integrated community of 2,500 families, mostly Maghrebi.
Messina
Overlooking the Strait between Scylla and Charybdis, it was devastated by the 1908 earthquake, but was reborn with much of its artistic heritage still intact. Don’t miss the villages that surround it.
Termini Imerese
Founded by the Carthaginians, long associated with its baths. The center is stunning, thanks to the “cammara picta” of the Town Hall. The Grand Hotel delle Terme designed by Damiani Almeyda will reopen just for the festival.
Trapani
A curved tongue of land shaped like a sickle, Trapani is the city of salt, of walls and ramparts, of mills and towers.
Sept. 30 to Oct. 30 (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays)
Palermo
Here in Palermo you can’t get bored; on the program are 87 places to visit, 26 special experiences, 100 walks and 9 out-of-town itineraries. Don’t miss the festival related to theater and music, tastings, a new podcast project with ten friends, and a videomapping that will transform the historic building as never before.
October 1 to 16, 2022 (Saturday and Sunday)
Alcamo
Famous for its history related to lordships, today Alcamo is the city of wine and art, also famous for its Bosco d’Alcamo Reserve.
Carini
Its castle inspired fascinating legends, the huge complex of catacombs testify to the presence of Christrianism, and the early Christian frescoes they conceal and the masterpieces of the Serpotta school make Carini a must-see destination.
Cefalù
Don’t miss the Fortress, a 268-meter-high promontory that juts out into the sea. Nature takes center stage; in fact, climbs have been organized all the way to the top. Certainly, there can be no shortage of art-related experiences to visit the museum where the “Portrait of an Unknown Sailor” is kept, as a land beloved by the young European scions of the Grand Tour.
Ragusa
Following the 1693 earthquake, Ragusa was reborn of its Baroque appearance. Ibla is an open-air salon thanks to its central square, where secret courtyards, aristocratic mansions, spectacular churches and the ancient conversation circle of aristocrats follow one another.
Scicli
You will surely fall in love with the facades of Via Mormino and Palazzo Beneventano, according to Unesco. You’ve probably already seen it in the TV drama “Il commissario Montalbano,” it was the workplace. Unique experiences offered by the festival are trails among forgotten quarries, mysterious caves and impressive nativity scenes.
October 1 to 30 (Saturday and Sunday)
Catania
It has as its symbol the phoenix engraved on the Garibaldi Gate; in fact, the city is always reborn from its ashes, just as it was in 1693. Its history is marked by eruptions, earthquakes and invasions, despite all its beauty has endured, present in amphitheaters, gardens, churches, domes and noble palaces.
